Strengthen your tooth for long-lasting crown support

What Is a Post and Core?

A post and core is a dental restoration used to rebuild a tooth that has had root canal treatment and lost significant structure. It consists of two parts:

  • Post – A small rod or pin that is cemented into the prepared root canal space, anchoring the restoration to the root
  • Core – Build-up material placed around the post that recreates the shape of the tooth, providing a foundation for a crown

When Is a Post and Core Needed?

Extensive Decay

When decay has destroyed most of the tooth crown before or during root canal treatment.

Large Old Fillings

When previous large fillings have left little natural tooth structure remaining.

Fractured Teeth

When the tooth has broken or fractured, leaving insufficient structure for a crown alone.

Front Teeth

Front teeth often need posts due to their thinner structure and the forces they experience.

The Post and Core Procedure

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a post and core?

A post is a small rod placed into the root canal of a tooth after root canal treatment. The core is built-up material around the post that recreates the shape of the tooth to support a crown.

Do all root canal teeth need a post and core?

No, only teeth with significant loss of tooth structure need a post and core. If enough natural tooth remains, a crown can be placed directly without a post.

What materials are used for posts?

We use fibre posts which are tooth-coloured and bond well to the tooth. They are also flexible like natural tooth structure, reducing the risk of root fracture.

Is placing a post and core painful?

No, the tooth has already had root canal treatment so there is no nerve. Local anaesthesia may be used for comfort but the procedure itself is painless.

How long does a post and core last?

With a well-fitted crown and good oral hygiene, a post and core restoration can last many years or even decades.
