What Is a Post and Core?
A post and core is a dental restoration used to rebuild a tooth that has had root canal treatment and lost significant structure. It consists of two parts:
- Post – A small rod or pin that is cemented into the prepared root canal space, anchoring the restoration to the root
- Core – Build-up material placed around the post that recreates the shape of the tooth, providing a foundation for a crown
When Is a Post and Core Needed?
Extensive Decay
When decay has destroyed most of the tooth crown before or during root canal treatment.
Large Old Fillings
When previous large fillings have left little natural tooth structure remaining.
