What Is Bone Grafting?

Bone grafting is a surgical procedure that adds bone material to areas of your jaw where bone has been lost or is insufficient. The graft material acts as a scaffold, encouraging your body to regenerate new bone in the area.

Ridge preservation is a specific type of bone graft performed immediately after tooth extraction to maintain the shape and volume of the jawbone, preventing the natural bone loss that occurs after losing a tooth.

When Is Bone Grafting Needed?

Before Dental Implants

When there is not enough bone height or width to support an implant securely.

After Tooth Extraction

Ridge preservation prevents bone collapse and keeps options open for future implants.

Gum Disease Damage

To rebuild bone destroyed by periodontal disease around teeth or implants.

Long-term Tooth Loss

Bone naturally shrinks after teeth are lost. Grafting can rebuild it years later.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a bone graft?

A bone graft is a procedure that adds bone material to your jaw to rebuild areas where bone has been lost. This creates a solid foundation for dental implants or improves jaw structure.

Why would I need a bone graft?

Bone grafts are needed when there is insufficient bone for implants, after tooth extraction to preserve the ridge, or to repair bone loss from gum disease or trauma.

Where does the bone graft material come from?

We typically use biocompatible synthetic bone graft material or processed donor bone. Your own bone can also be used in some cases. We will discuss the best option for you.

Is bone grafting painful?

The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia so you feel no pain during treatment. Some discomfort and swelling afterward is normal and managed with pain relief.

How long does bone graft healing take?

Initial healing takes 1-2 weeks. Full bone integration takes 3-6 months before implants can be placed. We monitor your healing with X-rays.
