Pulpotomy / Stainless steel crowns

Saving Baby Teeth with Advanced Treatment

When decay in a baby tooth extends deep enough to affect the nerve, a pulpotomy can save the tooth. Combined with a stainless steel crown, this treatment allows the tooth to function normally until it naturally falls out, maintaining space for the permanent tooth beneath.

Understanding Pulpotomy

A pulpotomy is sometimes called a baby root canal, though it is simpler. We remove only the infected portion of the nerve in the crown of the tooth, leaving healthy root tissue intact. This eliminates pain and infection while preserving the tooth.

Why Stainless Steel Crowns?

After pulpotomy or extensive decay removal, the remaining tooth structure is weakened. Stainless steel crowns:

  • Provide complete protection for the tooth
  • Are extremely durable for chewing
  • Last until the tooth naturally falls out
  • Require only one appointment to place
  • Are cost-effective and reliable

The Treatment Process

Anaesthesia

We ensure your child is completely numb before starting. Numbing gel is applied first so they barely feel the injection.

Decay Removal

All decay is carefully removed to access the nerve chamber. The infected nerve tissue in the crown is removed while preserving healthy root tissue.

Medication

A medicated dressing is placed over the remaining nerve tissue to promote healing and prevent infection.

Crown Placement

The tooth is prepared and a pre-formed stainless steel crown is fitted and cemented in place. This protects the tooth and allows normal chewing.

What to Expect After Treatment

Some tenderness is normal for a day or two but usually resolves quickly. Your child can eat normally once numbness wears off. The crown will fall out naturally when the baby tooth is ready to go, allowing the permanent tooth to come through normally.

When Extraction May Be Better

If the tooth is close to falling out naturally, or if infection has spread beyond what pulpotomy can treat, extraction may be recommended. We always aim to save teeth when beneficial but will advise honestly on the best option for your child.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a pulpotomy?

A pulpotomy is a nerve treatment for baby teeth. When decay reaches the nerve, we remove the infected portion while preserving the healthy root. This saves the tooth until it naturally falls out.

Why does my child need a stainless steel crown?

After pulpotomy or when a tooth has extensive decay, a stainless steel crown protects and strengthens the remaining tooth structure. It is the most durable option for baby molars.

Are stainless steel crowns visible?

On back teeth, crowns are barely visible. For front teeth, we can use white-faced crowns. Most children are proud of their silver teeth. The crown falls out naturally with the baby tooth.

Is the procedure painful for my child?

No, we use effective local anaesthesia so your child feels no pain during treatment. We are experienced in helping children stay calm and comfortable throughout.

How long does treatment take?

Pulpotomy and crown placement can usually be completed in one appointment of about 30-45 minutes. This avoids multiple visits and gets your child back to normal quickly.
